Tall Betsy has been appearing each
Halloween night since 1980 at the Allan Jones home , 150 Centenary
Avenue, NW, Cleveland, Tennessee,
By 1983 other neighbors began decorating their homes and joining in
the Halloween night festivities.
By 1986, the crowds were so large that MainStreet Cleveland, a downtown
revitalization group, organized a Halloween Block Party. Downtown
festivities included games, music, costume contests and treats, supported by
local businesses, civic clubs and organizations.
By 1993, the crowd count on Centenary Avenue was rising as more and more
trick or treaters appeared on the Jones' doorstep to see and listen to Tall
Betsy. That year, 11,201 pieces of bubble gum were handed out, one at a
time, to visitors. That number does not include parents, grandparents, etc.,
or smaller visitors too afraid to go to the doorway.
By 1998, the total number of visitors to Centenary Avenue had risen to
25,000 and Tall Betsy made her "official retirement appearance." That night,
she spent hours on the lawn reciting her legend and listening as thousands
chanted "Tall Betsy...Tall Betsy."
Today, Tall Betsy's costume is on loan each year to the Museum Center at
Five Points. Her costume and legend are shared each year in the Museum
Center by a storyteller who is keeping The Legend
of Tall Betsy alive for future generations.
